New WHO REPLACE initiative launched to eliminate industrially-produced trans fat

WHO on 14 May 2018 launched the REPLACE initiative to eliminate industrially produced trans fat by 2023 to reduce cardiovascular disease deaths, the world’s leading cause of death.

 WHO Director-General Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus says implementing the six strategic actions in the REPLACE package will help achieve the elimination of trans-fat, and represent a major victory in the global fight against cardiovascular disease. Dr. Tom Frieden, President and CEO of Resolve to Save Lives, says “trans-fat is an unnecessary toxic chemical that kills, and there’s no reason people around the world should continue to be exposed.”

Cargill to remove industrially produced trans fatty acids

Cargill announced on Dec. 6 that it has become the first global supplier to commit to eliminating industrially produced trans-fatty acids (iTFAs) from its entire global edible oils portfolio, a move that would put Cargill and its customers in compliance with the World Health Organization’s (WHO) recommended standard of a maximum two grams of iTFAs per 100 grams fats/oils by the end of 2023. Cargill joins many of the world’s largest food companies and members of the International Food and Beverage Alliance who have committed to the WHO goal.

WHO unveils plan to remove trans-fatty acids from food supply

The World Health Organization on May 14 released REPLACE, a step-by-step guide that the agency is urging governments and companies to consult in an effort to eliminate industrially-produced trans-fatty acids from the global food supply.
